Eucharistic Ministry and Ministry of the Word

Holy Mass consists of two parts: The Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Confirmed Catholics can have a role in both by acting as Ministers of the Word and as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

During the Liturgy of the Word, Ministers of the Word proclaim the first reading, the responsorial psalm, the second reading and the Gospel acclamation (the psalm and the acclamation may be sung by a member of the Choir). Later in the mass, the reader returns to the lectern and delivers the Prayers of the Faithful. As Holy Communion commences, the reader leads the Communion Antiphon from the congregation. Ministers of the Word prepare carefully before Mass, rehearsing the readings with prayerful contemplation so as to be able to teach rather than just read.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist the priest in distributing Holy Communion, receiving the Eucharist on the sanctuary before giving out the host or chalice. Ministers of the Eucharist may also take Holy Communion to parishioners who are sick/housebound.

Confirmed Parishioners of all ages are welcome to become Ministers of the Word. Training will be given to confirmed parishioners who wish to become Ministers of the Eucharist along with support for DBS application. Please contact office.stjoseph.wetherby@dioceseofleeds.org.uk or phone 01937 582283.
